"Defend yourself in this digital world. No one else will do it for you" -in memoriam of Arjen Kamphuis
Arjen Kamphuis was an Hacker and a Digital Self Defence professional (and a dear friend) who died in Norway in 2018, at the age of 46, as consequence of a kayaking accident. Arjen studied Science at the University of Utrecht, worked for IBM and Twynstra Gudde as IT architect, trainer and IT strategy advisor and was a certified IT auditor and Information Technology expert (CISA, CISM). He researched the possible social, economic and geo-political consequences relevant to science and technology, and helped people keep their secrets safe in the digital world. One of Arjen’s last talks, given in 2018, has been about the following topic: since IT espionage costs our independence, our security and prosperity, we can create our own IT systems that are independent and secure: we just need to decide to commit our resources to making them.
Balthazar Personal Computing Device. One laptop for the new Internet -Harv Stanic Staalman
Harv Stanic Staalman was born in Eastern Cape in South Africa and moved to Europe in early 80’s with his parents. Dutch citizen, with 2 degrees -one in Social and Cultural Antropology and the other one in Astrophysics he worked in a hi-tech and computer industry for more then 15 years, but also was teaching for 6 years at the University of Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany at a Chair for Experimental Radio on the Faculty of Media Art and Design and after that 2 more years Interaction design in a known Danish School of Design in Kolding, Denmark. As a Robotic Software Producer he worked a little over 5 years for Danish toymaker LEGO on a bridging the children’s minds and imagination to the software for a famous robotic toys line -LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT 2.0 and EV3 3.0 and MINDroid NDR. :D. As part of End Summer Camp 2019 Special Contents, Harv will present a PROPOSAL for an expensive, FOSS, Security and Privacy-Focused Laptop Computer.
Project's ambition is to create an international steering committee that will set in motion, lead and deliver a new industrial approach to "gestalt" inexpensive, FOSS laptop personal computing device. BPCD will contain all the HW/SW features and precautions to prevent any 3rd party intrusion into the system. Consortium will consist of industry and academia personas/professionals that will lead, guide and deliver BPCD. System is aimed to inexpensively enable end user to control all the inputs via HW switches and security dongles, preventing even a remote possibility to have system invaded by any 3rd party. It is NOT OLPC-like initiative, but it follows some of OLPC product design innovations and features, adopted and improved for today’s performance requirements focusing on privacy, safety and personal data protection and encrypted shared data or a retention of the same in its own secure “cloud”. Remember - a “Cloud” is just other people’s or corporations’ computers. Education being a very important issue today all over the planet is yet another field where BPCD will make an impact. New generations need to learn and understand the importance of being secure and how to care about their personal data, moreover additional connectors and IO’s also enable users to tinker and create their own devices or program LEGO sensors and actuators while retractable GPIO enables them in controlling, testing and programming sensors, actuators and other electronic devices and gadgets from literally every other manufacturer. We will deliver secure, innovative and well designed laptop that will be inexpensive, fully transparent following ethics of FSF, while also FOSS compliant in every aspect as in hardware so it will be in software, partnering with ethical and well respected global companies. It is aimed to run on Trisquel GNU, Debian and Ubuntu OS. Certain percentage of the profit will go directly to FOSS software developers to create user friendly SW and apps for the system. Also we will try to develop RISC-V card for further enabling upgrade-ability and sustainability. BPCD is FOSS and GPL v2, GPL v3 and copyleft with a CC-by-SA 4.0 where licenses apply, except respective partners' trademarks and copyrights.

Dibattito / Tavola Rotonda "The dark side of Open Source" a cura di Enos -da confermare
